On Saturday October 6, 2018, members celebrated Buxton’s 80th birthday with a special tour of Logee’s Greenhouses in Danielson CT.
Logee’s Greenhouses was started by William Logee in 1892. William’s eldest son, Ernest Logee, was interested in unusual forms of begonias and hybridized hundreds. He was one of the original founders of the American Begonia Society, creating the Buxton Branch in Massachusetts in 1938. Logee’s, at one time, grew 400 varieties of begonias. Today, Joy Logee Martin’s son, Byron Martin continues this begonia-growing legacy.
Byron and begonia-grower Desiree Nordby toured members through the main production facility, and related greenhouses with a final stop in the retail shop. He described Logee’s current begonia hybridizing program; members were pleased that two of Byron’s most recent hybrids B. ‘Martha Stewart’ and B. ‘Amelia’s Kaleidoscope’ were available for sale.
Following the greenhouse tour and a short drive to Woodstock, CT, members enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Inn at Woodstock Hill, followed by birthday cake.
