Wisnu Ardi will share insights into recent research, expeditions, and discoveries in the world of begoniaceae. Begonia is a very diverse genus, with around 1,930 species, distributed pantropically. Although Indonesia is known as one of the biodiversity hot spots on the planet, study of the genus Begonia by Indonesian botanists is relatively recent. The Bali Botanic Garden, in the central mountains, opened to the public in 1959. The first Begonia House was established in 2005, with a primary goal to conserve native Indonesia begonias.
Wisnu Ardi, is a horticulturist and plant systematis from the Bogor Botanical Garden on the Indonesian island of Java. He has participated in more than ten plant collecting expeditions in remote areas of the islands of Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi (Celebes) and Moluccas. He has published many articles in scientific journals and is working on A Guidebook to Begonias of Sulawesi.
