Lecture and Q&A: “Begonia Cultivars” with Don Miller
Don Miller’s striking begonia cultivars continue a 200+ year tradition of intentional hybridizing to achieve desired characteristics. Follow his quests for miniature plants, deeply curled leaves, distinctive silver, orange, and multi-hued coloration, bold patterning, and texture in a plant exhibit; attend Don’s in-person lecture; and purchase Don Miller cultivars in the Sales Area.
Lecture 1:30PM Saturday. Seating first come, first served.
How do I grow this Begonia?
We help answer this frequent question by grouping member-grown display plants in “House Plant” and “Terrarium” categories. This is a non-judged exhibit. In addition, discover where the species originate. Which have been known to science for centuries, and which are recently described? Which are threatened by habitat loss? For the cultivars, do we know what the seed and pollen parents were? What tips do the growers share?
Propagation Area
Catch the begonia fever by propagating at home! Many begonias are easily propagated from rhizomes and leaf or stem cuttings. See ‘props’ at multiple growth stages. Drop in on a formal demo on Saturday at 2:30PM or Sunday at 1:00PM. Stop by to ask an expert throughout the Show. Take a cutting home.
Sales Area
Shop for nursery-grown and member-propagated plants, both species and cultivars, including hard-to-find begonias. Plants are typically labeled by cultural requirements – Houseplant or Terrarium. Terrarium kits will also be available. The Sales Area is open throughout the Show. Shop early for best selection.
